Broken my Rivnut tool
saigonij - 24/12/07 at 08:59 AM

i cross threaded a rivnut yesterday, and then the bloody tool snapped when trying to insert a new one!

anyone tell me a few places that sell a replacement?

Use a Nut, a bolt, and a couple of washers, and you can fit the rivnut.
However, if you have a lot to fit, then the tool is the best item.

Shop around as the prices vary wildly on these tools. I have seen them for as little as a tenner, and up to £45 for the same item.

the tool that came with my mk kit snapped on fitting the very first one, great

I too have broken one, luckily it wasn't mine

I've just bought one from here http://www.zygology.com/products/tools.asp?category=threaded%20inserts

i got a 7486-9612 boxed kit for £43.00 +vat. I've used it a couple of times and no problem so far, quick delivery too.

£22 - ebay.
Used a few times and fine so far, although it doesn't feel as good as the Sealey one I borrowed a few times before buying one of my own, and because it doesn't feel as hardy, I've been quite careful with it...

It should be possible to replace the threaded mandrel yourself. I stripped the thread off the M4 mandrel but replaced it with an M4 stainless steel stud locked in place. It has worked well ever since.

If you can, buy one of these...

They do rivets as well and are very well made.

Best £50 I spent on this build!.... (I bought mine at a show)

prices vary from £45 - £70 so shop around..

the cheap (sub £40) ones last about five minutes.

Iv got one like daves. Rivets and rivnuts. Excellent tool. Be careful with ali nuts though. Theyr easily stripped with the leverage.
