farewell old freind :-(
theconrodkid - 15/7/05 at 02:36 PM

after many years of faithfull serivce and abuse my poor washing machine has lost its lost sock and removed its last embarising stain,it is dead!
after a brief service it will be dumped with full domestic honours and a 21 gun salute.
i have to look for a new machine,as i know zip about the good bad or ugly of domestic appliances i ask that you spend a few moments in deep thought and recomend a make to me.
it needs to be simple (i am a man afterall)
cheap
hard working
indistructible.
thanks for taking the time to read this plea

DarrenW - 15/7/05 at 02:38 PM

The drum can be recycled to make an exhaust heat shield. This may be a fitting tribute to your old faithful.

RIP.

theconrodkid - 15/7/05 at 02:43 PM

that thought had crossed my tiny mind,i could carry a photo of it in my wallet at all times as well

marktigere1 - 15/7/05 at 02:43 PM

Sorry to hear that

Cheap and good makes are:

Bosch
Zanusi - (mines 4 years old and still going strong)

Medium to expensive are:

Miele - Should last you forever.

Avoid any spin cycle greater than 1000 on cheaper machines as this shoots the bearings (I was told this by a Hotpoint engineer) and don't put it in a garage. (worst thing you can do, condensation etc)

Also avoid those fangled computer controlled things as they always go wrong.

Hope this little offering is a comfort in this your saddest time.

All the best and pass on my best to your fridge, freezer, microwave, toaster and other relatives.

Cheers

Mark

Bosch -Bosch - Bosch

Just get a basic model one. We had two Jap makes and they both lasted just long enough for the guarantee to have run out.

Oh yes, and the Bosch has a three year waranty

Got mine from this lot:

This is HEAVY HEAVY men's business!!

I'm touching wood , i've had my Zanussi for 10yrs+.........

marktigere1 - 15/7/05 at 03:04 PM

Have you thought of the Locost option?

A bucket and a big stick!!

Ill second that. Worse thing you can do is put a household implement operated primarily by the other types in your huffy house. You need at least one place that is sacrisant
On top of that they take up valuable space, make a lot of noise and drown out the radio (im still talking of the washing machine here - not swmbo!)

On serious note - try co-op website. Ive bought a few bits off them for a lot less than high street prices. You can get cheaper but they are reliable imho.

second that - eventually my whole household will be Bosch. Washer, Fridge, Boiler... brilliant.

My condolenses go to you and yours at this sad time.

EddThompson - 15/7/05 at 03:58 PM

bosch have a 2 year warrenty, avoid the very cheap one as its not a bosch, its probably a whirlpool.

zanussi are not the company they were, in the last few years have become a bit more unreliable.

LGs are good washers, as are mieles, simens are good too. try to find a siemens or a miele with a 5 year warrenty there are a few on off i think.

sold wahers for a over year, not been selling them for a year a so but i doubt much has changed since

Cita - 15/7/05 at 03:59 PM

Siemens,it's a bit expencive but consider it as a tool.
Good tools cost money but they will last much longer and can take more abuse.

jonbeedle - 15/7/05 at 04:11 PM

We have a Philco. Cheap and robust and has been going for years. I don't know what it's like to operate you'd have to ask the missus as it's girlie stuff. Come to think of it why are we even discussing this on this forum? Let's get back to macho manly things please!

James - 15/7/05 at 04:15 PM

Conrod... you wash your clothes?

James

Jasper - 15/7/05 at 04:19 PM

James - do you wash yours? Or get your Mum to do it

BTW - I think I've only used our's once in 3 years - and that's the way I like it

LOL this is a daft thread to have on a mans site. Sorry to any women on here.

We have an indesit. Not expensive and bloody good. (he says as he touches his desk)

As Bernie Eccleston said "women should always wear white just like domestic appliances"

Sorry that was my sexist hat.

Peteff - 15/7/05 at 05:18 PM

We had a Hoover for 16 years and it only ever had new brushes, a pump and a door seal. Bought an Ariston and it had broken down before the delivery van left and has never been right since.

mangogrooveworkshop - 15/7/05 at 05:18 PM

First your dog and now the washing machine Hard times ahead sir Sorry to hear of the loss...mgw

theconrodkid - 15/7/05 at 05:38 PM

ChrisW - 15/7/05 at 07:29 PM

Conrod - I can get very good discounts on Bosch stuff through work and they throw in 5 year warranty I think (maybe longer)

All above board - ie we are allowed to buy for friends.

Not cheap stuff mind, but supposed to be very good!

Chris

donut - 15/7/05 at 08:03 PM

If i was in a position to give awards i would give this thread the daftest thread award 2005.........it's just brilliant!

theconrodkid - 15/7/05 at 08:16 PM

chris you have mail, what makes you think this thread is daft?i ask a question about the quality or otherwise of a machine and get some un-biased answers, whats daft about that?

Fozzie - 15/7/05 at 10:01 PM

John,

Sorry to hear about your loss!
....sexist or not...not everyone has another half!

My twopennyworth:-
1st.... Bosch
2nd....Zanussi

Fozzie

SixedUp - 15/7/05 at 11:15 PM

Bosch are excellent, but expensive. Siemens are made by the same company (at one point in the same factory) but with a few less features, and a smaller price tag. Both are ultra-reliable, and very high quality.

My plan is to eventually have all the domestic stuff in my house be one or the other.

Cheers
Richard

donut - 15/7/05 at 11:29 PM

Ok john i'll be serious

Buy a Bosh, they're great!

fesycresy - 16/7/05 at 11:22 AM

I asked my missus her opinion.

She told me to get a life, get back in the garage and finish building "her" car.

theconrodkid - 30/7/05 at 05:55 PM

update,i got a bosch, its so quiet compared to my old one, even has a "non iron"setting, whitch is handy as i dont posses an iron

David Jenkins - 30/7/05 at 08:33 PM

What really imresses me is that Fozzie has managed to say absolutely nothing on this thread - well done!
