13" rims with rear discs?

I've just bought an XR4x4 rear end for the diff. It comes complete with shafts and framey thing but the discs and caliper are missing. I was considering fitting drums but then for ease, I thought I'd go with a disc set-up. I found some tiny rear calipers off a Daihatsu that have handbrake mechanisms. Tiny is good as the discs that I had on my Atlas were far too eficient for my car and the rears were locking up before the fronts. To get around this, I reduced the pad area. Then chucked the discs and fitted drums. Now I'm fitting the IRS, I want to make sure that my 13" rims will work with Sierra brakes. If they won't. I'll get the Diahatsu ones tomorrow!

Evevnin'!

I believe that certain wheels will fit with rear disc brakes - namely Compomotive CXR's and the Team Dynamics Pro Race wheels that Mac#1 distribute.

I'd be interested whether any of the standard Ford 13" aloys would fit though.

I've now got three sets of 13" rims fitted with sticky tyres so I'm not swapping them!!! The Daihatsu calipers were nice and small and the handbrake mechanism was tucked up towards the middle of the hub. I may buy them anyway and fit them to the back of my other Mini based Magenta!

I dont think sierra rear discs will fit in most 13" rims.

You can always keep drums and still use the lsd.

im running sierra xr4x4 read disks and 13"team dynamics pro race 1.2s and had to modd return spring on hand brake mech other than that they fit lovely

you can use escort Mk3 front disks instead. You need to turn down the hub by a few mm.

This places the caliper further in-board, which means it all fits together.

With sierra disks it all gets too close to the wheel (with the exception of some super expensive ones). sierra disks are 253mm, escort mk3 fronts are 240mm. With the Sierra stuff you can grind off theback of the caliper a bit, and elongate the holes and buy yourself a few mm, but it is a lot of time and is all a bit unsatisfactory.


For the escort solution. You will need to change your caliper mounting brackets (as the caliper is further inboard and nearer to the axis of the hub), which is a pain on disk braked rear end, as you have to cut off perfectly good brackets.

Daihatsu stuff sounds interesting. I'd like to see how it turns out, as the Sierra/Escort combination isn't light-weight.

Is it not possible to use the existing brackets with some spacers?

i used early fiesta fron discs on mine with sierra calipers, the discs are tiny and cheap.

if you are not using ford calipers then you need to make new brackets anyway

Thanks for the info guys. I've collected the Daihatsu calipers and I have some mk3 Escort discs that were on the Atlas axle so I'll see how they measure up. WATCH THIS SPACE....

Here's the calipers!



And here's one sat on an Escort disc inside my13" alloy.


There's tons of room!! There's over 10mm of clearance. Probably 15mm.
Now as soon as I get the Sierra back end here, we'll have another look!
