.txt files to .xls?
MikeCapon - 3/5/11 at 08:48 AM

I have a very large file (it's a customer list) saved as text with semi colons between each field like this:

Name; Line 1 Address; Line 2 Address; Line 3 Address; Postcode; Telephone; Fax; Mail;

I am sure there is a way of transferring this to an Excel spreadsheet with the semi colons determining a new field so each of the above appears in it's own cell.

I hope this is clear. Not being an IT whiz I often get the techy terms wrong.

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Depends on the version of excel, in 2007 go to the data tab, then the top left you'll see 'get external data', and there is a 'from txt' button in there.

I cant remember how to do it in earlier versions, but one way I've used in the past when the auto imports wouldn't work was to save it in word, then convert text to table, then copy and paste the table into excel.

Just load the text into Excel, and then go to 'Data/Convert Text to Columns' (or something like that) and choose ; as the delimiter

In Excel 2000

File ¦ Open

Change to .txt files and find your .txt file

Then on the text import Wizard Page 1 of 3, change the top radio button to 'Delimited'

text import Wizard Page 2 of 3, make sure Comma is ticked and untick the rest

Then hit finish.

Voila!

If this doesn't get exactly what u want then play around with the wizard settings.
