liam.mccaffrey - 29/8/05 at 10:47 AM

can anyone think of any other engines which as standard are all ali

apart from

I4 Duratec
K series
RV8

Liam - 29/8/05 at 10:59 AM

Plenty of ally V6s about. Honda, Alfa Romeo, Ford, Mazda, Rover...

liam.mccaffrey - 29/8/05 at 11:07 AM

i thought that there were alfa v6's that were ali

Rover KV6? isn't it?

nice alloy v6 be good in a seven do you think?

britishtrident - 29/8/05 at 11:13 AM

KV6 in the pre Rover 75 versions were NBG --- even in the 75 and post 2001 Freelander version it has the potential for costing a lot of money to fix.
It is also a lot more complex than the 4 cylinder K16.

2.5 v6 duratec from a st24/cougar is a nice lump of ali, if its good enough for a noble (with twin turbos added) it should be good enough for a 7.

Liam - 29/8/05 at 11:16 AM

I was originally going for a KV6 after reading an article in a kit car mag. I joined a rover 800 forum to research it and was told to avoid it and go for the 2.7 honda V6 in pre 96 models. The rest is history...

liam.mccaffrey - 29/8/05 at 11:22 AM

i thought the kv6 was a bit of a pain but i can't remember why. is it unbalanced or somthing?

Liam - 29/8/05 at 11:44 AM

Um head gaskets mainly I think. Cant quite remember. All sorted now in the latest 75s, but early 800 versions were essentially experimental!

nick205 - 29/8/05 at 12:28 PM

a lot of peugeot engines are all alloy construction, in particular the XU series used in GTis and Mi16s

liam.mccaffrey - 29/8/05 at 12:37 PM

yes the mi16 i knew that was alloy but i forgot.

thanks guys

MikeRJ - 29/8/05 at 01:22 PM

Nissan SR20DE(T)

All alloy and serious power can be had from the turbo'd DET. Also used in the RWD 200SX so a mating gearbox is available.

bimbleuk - 29/8/05 at 01:43 PM

Toyot engines.

1GZ-FE 5 ltr V12
1UZ-FE 4 ltr V8
3UZ-FE 4.3 ltr V8
1ZZ-FE 1.8 ltr
2ZZ-FE 1.8 ltr

donut - 29/8/05 at 01:45 PM

How about a nissan Micra???

Don't forget that some of these later engines come with very complicated looms with sensors for just about everything!

gazza285 - 29/8/05 at 02:08 PM

Volvo white block engines.
Alfa four cylinder engines are alloy.
Ford BDG, probably out of your price range that one though.

cosworth - 29/8/05 at 03:02 PM

Ford Focus/Fiesta 1.6 Zetec SE

britishtrident - 29/8/05 at 03:05 PM

Got to say it Hillman Limp & Chrysler Sunbeam 930

gazza285 - 29/8/05 at 03:10 PM

Interesting side note. When you put "spares and repairs" into eBay's search function one of the related searches is "Hillman Hunter".

All alloy and rear wheel drive........Reliant Robin.

Volvorsport - 29/8/05 at 03:33 PM

dont forget the loverly PRV6 - which when the updated B280E came out was fitted in all the alpines with twin turbos .

theres a chap in the us with a volvo 260 rally car with a single T4 turbo updated heads ,forged rods with 600 hp / 600ft/lbs torque - hes also destoyed most of the driveline along with two major excursions on to its roof !!

Arthur Dent - 29/8/05 at 08:35 PM

Suzuki Swift GTi

Hellfire - 29/8/05 at 09:59 PM

Most modern cars are all alloy now... Cast iron is heavy and expensive difficult to machine and a nightmare for COSHH in the UK and Europe. Seems to be ok for Far Eastern countries though...

MikeRJ - 29/8/05 at 10:15 PM

Cast iron is quite nice to machine, though very abrasive so hard on tools.

Hellfire - 29/8/05 at 10:58 PM

Depends on type - I work on Martensitic and Iron Carbide impregnated - not much fun I assure you. Standard diesel engine blocks - Toyota Yaris - are simple SG which is a POP.

gazza285 - 29/8/05 at 11:06 PM

No mention of any bike engines yet?

The Zetec SE was the Yamaha developed engine and is only available in 1250 and 1700 formats.

Has anyone mentioned the Chevy LS1 yet?

ChrisGamlin - 1/9/05 at 08:47 PM

What about the 2.2 Vauxhall engine from the Astra / VX220 etc?

ned - 1/9/05 at 09:01 PM

yup the latest ie 2000 i think onwards big block ecotecs are ally, not sure about the smaller capacity ones.

MilesE - 6/9/05 at 06:53 PM

Pretty sure the 1.4/1.6 16v vauxhall blocks are iron, the ones up to around 2000 are at least.

How much weight reduction is there from a typical alloy block over a cast one? 20kg?

Saw somewhere on the net that the B16A and like engines have alloy blocks, although this was forum guesses I think, so not definative.

britishtrident - 6/9/05 at 07:15 PM

An open deck wet liner alloy block with liners is about 1/3 the weight a normal style cast iron one.

ChrisGamlin - 6/9/05 at 07:48 PM

I think the 2.2 might be the only large 4 cylinder Vx engine that is ally, I think the 2L Ecotec is still iron cos AFAIK its basically the old Red Top Xe engine with a strangled emissions friendly head on it, dunno about the other smaller ones.
