Vinyl Wrapping for bodywork?
adrianreeve - 29/12/09 at 04:55 AM

Is there any reason I can't use a vinyl wrap for my black rear and side panels as an alternative to paint, and how much will it cost me?

Cheers

Adrian

EBay has it, but it isn't meant for cars, just signs, so it doesn't go around corners very well. Mine turned out OK, but Paint would be better. I used two different batches and it doesn't really match.

sides, back panel, interior back panel, stripes, and bonnet are all vinylled.

It wasn't expensive, and you can kind of tell.

Vinyl wrapping is used on vehicles and there are grades with differing life extectancy.
It may be a job where it is better to get it done by a skilled person.
If your panels are aluminium and not GRP you could also considerpowder coating.

I know someone who did it to their Caterham.
Took a mad turn, ordered it from ebay, got stuck in and did it.

Not perfect, but when he gets fed up, he can rip it off and change colour / pattern.

Have a look at this thread.

My pal did the single seater for me in metallic black wrap.
I can ask him the code of the proper vinyl for compound curves if you like.

I watched him do it though, and it looked hard work even for a pro.

Reckon a back panel would be easier, its the tight compond curves that are hard work, i did the side panels of the ST myself in ordinary sign vinyl, which was fairly easy as they are flat. just spray everything with a weak solution of fairy liquid in water.

Hi Adrian
His phone is off at the moment, however this is the manufacturers site, and it has a good product selector which might help.

I bought the vinyl for the ST from Amari plastics in Leeds, they were quite helpful at the time, i just told them what i wanted to do and they advised me what to use.
