I need help deciding what the best option for a bonnet would be.
As you can see from the pictures below, the off side chassis rail just has a couple of brake pipes running down it and the nearside has a massive air
intake sticking out a few inches so i was thinking id hinge the bonnet on the off side and make a scoop for the air intake. What i cant decide though
is how to make the bonnet. Anyone who votes other, please give details.
ps, i know the tyres are the wrong way round in the bottom picture

With an engine like that I think you should go for a clear Perspex one!!!

New ally one, and make a scoop yourself from ally to cover the hole you'll have. Rivet or bond onto the bonnet. Or just leave a hole and cover with mesh. Just some ideas.
Speedy that looks the dogs!
A Cobra style exhaust would set it off a treat.
IMHO of course.

The scuttle and chassis rails look slightly bowed. Is that due to the weight of the engine?
PS - I voted for the most popular option so far....... LEAD
Phil
Is that one of those new 6 cylinder bike engines?
Speedy I've dipped in and out of your posts for a while (the highs and the lows!). Maybe others were more aware than me of how that was looking
though. That looks the nuts mate.
My vote would be to modify what you have, or what you can buy cheap. If it doesn't work, so what? At least you'll know.

I would have thought an ali bonnet was the cheapest option. £25 at the most I'd have thought.
Could you replace the air filter with a foam 'cone' type filter? Then it could stick out through a hole in the bonnet (like Flak
Monkey's and many others) and not be an SVA problem.
Do you have to have the brake lines there? I would really want to sit my bonnet on top of those side rails and then clamp it down tight on there.
Cheers,
James
Hellfire - Yes the scuttle is bowed. Not quite sure why but i kind of like it
I was thinking about a small scoop to vent hot air out there anyway.
A bit like the old e-type.
James - Please tell me where i can pick up some ali sheet for £25!
Cheapest i have found was £120 +vat +post
The brake lines were put there for when i (for some unknown reason) thought i would be able to succeed in making a full front end (the lows as
contaminated puts it
) If i were to move them, i would end up with a couple of holes left in the chassis where the clips are at the moment. I think
there is enough room there to put the hinges on the outside and there will be room for at least 5mm of bonnet thickness.
Mark Allanson - Lol
Look in the local yellow pages for a sheet metal fabricator near you and buy from them. They could cut to rough size or template for you also .The last
time i asked a sheet of 1.2mm big enough for a bonnet was about £20 plus vat.
You really ought to move the brake lines as the bonnet needs a good seat on the chassis , you need to allow for flexing and would also find it
difficult to fit if you needed to balance on the edge of the chassis when fitting it.
It does look as if the car is taking shape nicely now and i bet your looking forward to driving it.

If it helps...
The last price I got from Aalco was £24.50 +vat +del for a 2m x1m 1.5 thick.
Delivery is the killer as they have a fixed price of £17 +vat, regardless of quantity.
Good if you have loads of items but bad for just one sheet.
Cheers
