fibreglass Side panel Cutting Holes help?
jossey - 19/11/10 at 08:29 PM

Firstly let me say thanks for big vee twin who has sorted out my side panels.

now its time to fit them.

any ideas how to drill out the holes for the wishbone brackets?

i wat thinking of making a card template and cutting the holes out.

then laying this on the fibre glass and cutting out circles with a hole saw?

Any better ideas?

i notice my suspension wishbone mounting brackets are 52mm on the outside so i would need to cut a 54mm hole and be spot on.

help would be good.

i cant find anything on build diaries.

cheers

Using a card template is the way most do it.. Just make one that copies the FG panel then hack it about, just make sure you can align the template to the FG panel correctly before cutting (might want to put some alignment marks on the card+GF+chassis as points of referance).

im hoping a fine blade hole saw should work with some masking tape and luck :O)

thanks again.

use the hole saw,but put the drill in reverse! it stops the initial cut from chipping the gel coat

cut slightly under and use a dremmel type tool to smooth the edges

Blunt drills are best! Don't breathe in the dust - use a vacuum or do it outside.

A jigsaw works well, and a dremmel cutting disc. (neat but slow!)

Best method i found was to stitch trill a line of holes inside your desired hole markings on the panel, then join up the holes with a dremel to remove most of the waste material, then wrap a sheet of sandpaper onto a tube of appropriate size then sand the hole to the desired size/shape.

By using a tube close to the size of the desired hole size a perfectly round hole can be achieved (important if your recessing things into the panel as i have done.

Also when filing or sanding the GF panel do cutting strokes from the top side down to avoid chipping the gel coat.

Glad you like them make a card template measure ten times cut once. I found dremmel best and be very patient.make sure you wear a mask and glasses

Knew I had a picture, take all measurements from the point where the chassis starts to change from straight to narrow the crease on the bodywork is the same position.

Firstly I made the template got that cut fettled it and then taped it to the car in the right place measured from the point above to a mark on the card and then transferred to the GRP using the same measurement.

Cut the square holes using a small cutting disk on the dremmel and finished by gently hand sanding, I actually chain drilled the circular hole for the steering rack and opened it out using a sanding bobbin on the dremmel as in the picture.

You will also need to cut the top return to the width of the top chassis rail from the crease to the end where to nose fits, also the end will need trimming to reflect the shape of the back of your nose cone where they meet - takes forever, but see second picture

I would avoid square corners, it you can radius then, much better.
