Just jumped onto my vw bug and now that all the masses of welding are done I've been looking at getting the paintwork out the way. Unfortunatly it's been so long in the old damp garage where I was storing it, some of the panels like the skuttle are quite rusty. Quite heavy surface rust that won't just sand off.

Anyone know of a good product to treat it or remove this rust for good. It will have to be brush on as dipping or blasting the shell is out the question. Things like the bonnet and wings I'm just going to ditch rather than treat them so it should be not big a task.

Bilt_Hamber do a selection of de-rusting compounds.

Some are for imersion and some ar gells for paint on then rinse off.
Some are primers and waxes.

Or Oxalic Acid Gel from; http://mistralni.co.uk/ Brush on, wash off. Simples.

there is a handy paint, upol reface (or similar name) that may be useful to help level things up, or dolphin glaze may do the trick.

I have some parts currently lying in a bucket of citric acid, much cheaper than phosphoric acid and does a similar job. Sulphamic acid may be stronger, but keep an eye on it, you may end up with little car left

Don't be afraid of buying an acid rather than the "proper" branded stuff, there is no difference, except the price, but do the research on what each product actually is.

cool, yeah I think I'll be needing some kind of filler primer once the metals cleaned but at least it will be well keyed!
