Fibreglass sheet for splitter - where ?

Hello All,

Trying to find a source of cheap fibreglass sheet material to make a couple of front splitters for my fury. Needs to be about 3-4mm thick, rigid and 1.4m by 0.6m. Pics of the wooden template below, anyone know where i can get something cheaply ?

Make it yourself, I use hard board for my splitter moulds, just lay 3 layers of 300 gsm over the top of waxed hardboard. You may need a couple more layers if you dont put some shape in

what about aluminium composite board (diabond) comes in 2 and 3mm thick very rigid and light, cuts and drills easy, can buy it in 8x4 sheets.
i use it all the time to make signs out of and i've used it to great effect on kits.

Just sand the ply to a nice radius and cover with GRP using just surface tisue on both sides. Other than that, cover the top of the ply with something that the resin wont attack then lay up many layers of 600g CSM, and then trim to size. HTH Ray

i used to always use duck tape to stop resin sticking to carpets an metal in the boots of cars when i did custom ice boot builds. works a treat.

I think a flat sheet is not going to be rigid enough at speed. The addition of some U channel underneath front to back and transverse on top and faired in may be needed to add rigidity.

Just cover with cling film leaves a lovely smooth finish as well

I would use the Gaffa Duct or as i know it HMB tape. I have used CFS in cornwall for my composite supplies they provide a good service. With the drop in carbon fibre prices might be worth doing a carbon one as they look lovely require no painting and when its gets damaged/chipped easy to repair.

Thanks all for the replies - Ideally i wanted to mould my own, incorporating an air dam between the top edge of the splitter and the bonnet, but times running away with me at the mo.

Was therefore looking at a plan B and make something later in the year, but on reflection i think i might just seal and paint the wooden template and use that for now.

Painting and using the wooden one will allow you to test the shape cheaply before you go to all of the effort to make it look nice.

Not as cheap as ply, I'd ask if they have any seconds though.

I was at Amari plastics yesterday, and saw some interesting foam core PVC that would do this job. They also had some interesting sign boards, similar to the PVC foam stuff, and sign board with foam core and ali skins, in various thicknesses.

Look up the Amari website, and find your nearest depot.
