My wife's just bought a new (to her) car - a mitsubishi lancer ralliart. it's a great motor but after driving it away we realised it had a windscreen wiper scratch. I originally just thought it was a worn wiper but no, there is a scratch. it's very fine and I can understand how the dealer missed it - you can't really see it from the outside.

First of all, I've asked them to pay for having it polished out (no reply yet). It's complex because I live in Harrogate and the dealer is in Reading. I am frequently down to Reading so it's not as if I can't go back and cause a stink. However, they've been great so far and I am keen to give them a chance to sort it

I wondered a couple of things that maybe the collective can help on ...

1) have you ever had this kind of polishing done and to what effect.
2) can you recommend anyone?
3) have you done it yourself?
4) I recon i have great support under sale of goods act, so have a strong position for a fight. As it happens, I'm meeting my solicitor tonight so will have a chat with her.

firstly give them a chance, secondly they could say that its happened since you collected it . it may have been from debris from the road etc being caught under the wiper. I have removed scrotched from glass using jewelers rouge and a sizel mop. If you use this method make sure you concentrate on the are around the scrtch too as this can cause a noticeable indentation in the glass if to much time is localised to the scratch only

It's a second hand car (and clearly not a locost so I'm not sure why it's in this forum! :-) ), I'm not sure why you think they should pay for it when you didn't look carefully enough to see it? It's not like a tiny scratch will make the car unsaleable. I mean I've bought a few second hand cars before and never once driven away, spotted a scratch/dent and thought "why did the dealer not return this to perfect condition before selling it?".

Have a look on detailingworld.co.uk for advise, you can get the scratch out with a DA and the correct cutting paste
