What is the average cost of labour to get the car prepared, primed and painted to a reasonable standard? I spoke to a guy last night who estimated
that it would take about 40 hours and wanted £600 for the work. Does that sound about right?
My car is not bad for dents and things, it is not perfect but is in better nick than i thought it might have been at this stage.
Also, that price is for me taking it all to bits and delivering to his workshop.
The other issue is that he cannot do the work for some time (May at the earliest), so that is a convenient 'get-out' if i need one, not that
anything is agreed.
Any guidance appreciated.
I was told to expect around £100 per panel, if you do all the basic preparation.

Theres a guy round here who will do an entire car including paint for £100 if you do the prep.
Mind you that could be emulsion with a roller.

Thats what I thought Ben in saying that 2 Litres of 2 pack can be had from autopaint for 20 squids or so for a stock colour.

). Oi've finished painting the porch sor, fer anuther £20 Oi'll give yer Morcedes a coat as well.
£600 sounds o.k. for the job lot but get
some form of warranty if you can. Unless the car is good and you just want a colour change you could get bubbles appearing after a very short while if
the prep is skimped on.
edit:- Do you mean the Locost? If so it sounds a lot.

1 ltr 2K etch (1=1) = £ 22.80
0.8 ltr 2k HiBuild = £ 32.20
1.5 ltr polyester Colour = £39.50
0.75 base thinners = £ 9.80
2 ltr Clearcoat + accel = £26.00
Takrags, wipe, mask
abrasives = £10.00
£140.30 materials. you would get retailed this at about £200
20 Hours labour @ £24.50 = £490.00
A reasonable top line job should be about £700
I used the best materials, and didn't rush, you could save 30% on the materials or 50% if using top line 1K stuff, and a small 1 man band
bodyshop will probably charge you £18 per hour.
I was very pleased with the results I got for £140.00 of materials (It didn't cost me that, I got a very substantial bulk buyers discount - I
spend about £1500 a week on paint!), but that is what you would expect to pay if you just walked into the shop.
My invoice came in the name of Mark Owing (made me laugh!)
Cost me over £150 ten years ago just for enough 2 pack to spray a mini pick up and that was at trade prices £600 sounds very cheap to me!
Many years ago, a friend of mine's brother in law had just sprayed a car (outside) and apparantly it looked alright.
He was just about to pack up, when a "traveller" stuck his head in, and said could Alan paint his Transit.
"I'll have to get the paint"
"Got that!"
"What you got?
"Dulux"
"What will I thin it with?
"There's a gallon of petrol in the footwell"
From what I gather, it looked quite alright
About a tenner in todays money

If you don't want a metallic finish and a bit strapped for cash, Tekaloid is very tough, easy to paint and about £15 per litre, you would still need the etch for ally or GRP
I suppose you get what you pay for to a certain extent. I am going to ask a few more sprayers for a price, if thats what it costs i'll just have
to get on with it. I need it done before May anyway so will have to get somene else probably. The problem is that i know this guy is good.
I dont want to spend 15 months of my life building a car for some twat to ruin it with a crap paint job. I would be willing to pay that wee bit extra
to get a good finish.
I'll let you know the other prices i get. Thanks for the comments/info anyway.
Just got another price this morning, approximately £350 (that is getting closer to what i thought). Also, he can do it within the next couple of
weeks.
