Has anyone had glass cut from an existing car windshield. I am tempted to use the windscreen and mounts from my donor -mgb- but the screen would need about 5 inches taken out. I would be fine with having it taken out of the center and a pillar put in there to re-strengthen it. ( I was going to go with a split and raked screen anyway but thought this may be an option-- but I am guessing that the cost may be prohibitive.

I would think you would have to include the e mark in the bit of glass you use, plus if your splitting the screen then I'm guessing both sides would need the mark too.

What about taking it to an autoglass specialist and seeing if they could cut it for you? They might be able to remark it too.

I remember being told by a glazier that as glass got old it became more brittle and more difficult to cut.
If you have the MGB screen sell it on Ebay and buy a locost screen. there probably won't be much money in it and if the 'B' screen breaks in the cutting then you have nothing.

Definitely glass age hardens also any crack type deffects in the glass tend to grow to significant stress raisers -- try cutting a sheet of window glass that is a few years old, it usually shatters.

I saw some armour plated glass in a machine tool I was working on today. It was marked with the RAC logo... maybe give them a try?

Use a diamond edge ceramics slitting saw in a hand grinder - its the type of thind they use to cut floor/wall tiles. I have done this in the past with great success. It just need a steady hand.

Oh and if the screen is laminated, cut both sides of the glass and then cut the plastic with a sharp knife. If you try to gring through the plastic, it will melt and gum everything up.
