How tall is your scuttle
Micael - 9/5/05 at 12:48 PM

I'm trying to decide how tall my scuttle should be. After some measurement I have found out that 340 mm over the top reiling should be ok.
It is approx the same height as rear top reiling. I have a book chassie

How tall is your scuttle?

550mm above the top of your seat base is as much as is comfortable to look over, unless you are 7ft tall.
Your best bet is to use some rigid wire. sit in your car and bend the wire to the proposed shape of your scuttle. once happy with the height, tape newspaper over the wire to form a "dash" and recheck.

It needs to be at least 1" above the noscone height of you get the optical illusion that the bonnet is sloping backwards

Mark,

How did you manage to bend your ERW?

I tried yesterday, but the result was far from alright. I even tried to heat the ERW up with my gas welder but it didn't work.
I use 15*15*1.5 mm ERW.

Now I'm thinking of using 30*3 mm mild steel instaed and have some support frame underneath

I would have thought 670mm (340mm scuttle + 330mm of chassis) was getting a bit high.

If you've got the seat or can replicate it then sit in the car and then replicate the scuttle with something (plastic oil cans worked for me and just see if you'll be able to see over it ok.

Maybe you're a giant!

What engine are you using btw?

Cheers,
James

Hmm... something is wrong here...
Maby it was 240 mm scuttle.
I have to check

Micael - 10/5/05 at 11:41 AM

Yes it was 240 mm, so the total hight of the scuttle will be 570 mm.

I used 13mm erw, I used the old bicep method formed over a cut up sheet of contiboard and clamps to keep it in place until I welded in the base supports

ah... the good old bicep method. I will give it a try.

I made my scuttle frame out of 13x13x3mm angle. I just notched where the bends are and formed it around an mdf panel cut to the right radius. Came out pretty good and it should be easy to fit the dash because I can drill and screw through one side of the angle.
Can post pics if you need....

Cheers,

Tim

I manage to bend the ERW with a mixture of the bicep method and some heat from the gas welder.

Thanks for your reply
