aralditing a dzus fastener to grp
ned - 19/1/06 at 06:13 PM

is this ok to do?

basically i need to attach a dzus to the nosecone as i don't have the clearance for the back of a rivet head between the nosecone and the bracket it is attaching to.

Obviously I'd roughen up the back of the dzus fastener and the grp so it keys well.

Is there any reason (thinking chemical/catalyst/reactant) that means I shouldn't do this?

ta,

Ned.

Nope, no reason why you shouldnt do it. As long as you prep the surfaces well you will be ok. Araldite bonds well to GRP if you do it right.

Surely there's room for a (slightly?) countersink rivet Ned?

surely any rivet takes up the same amount of space on the back of the panel?

anyway, how did it go ned? it was something i was looking at for my new indy, but was wondering about clearance. this solves it hopefully, if it worked.

oooh arrrrr!

Too much beer and not enough sleep!!!!!

Sorry Ned, I was being stupid (again!!), see what you mean!

The ideal would probably be one of the more rigid PU adhesives as these are very crack resistant.

For what it's worth, 90% of the Dzus and Camlock fasteners used in aircraft are not fixed to the component, they are retained by split spring washers around the shanks. The drawback here is the components fret against the fastener.
If it was me I would trim off the ears where the rivets should go (for cosmetic reasons) and glue the fastener on with a flexible adhesive.

there are a couple of pics i took last night in my archive under 'build jan 06' but they're not very specific to the dzus' i'm afraid!

I only had slow setting araldite for some reason, must have needed it slow setting previously for something, pliable for 2 hours and 16 hours to set, so I'll let you know tonight when I get home!
