I have now got my door skins for my middy - inner and outer. When they are bonded together they will make a very rigid (but light) gull wing door. The question is, what should I use to bond the two together?
PU Adhesive or resin? The PU might give a slightly flexible bond which is less prone to cracks (they will inevitably get slammed occasionally) but the resin option might be stronger.

I would tend to think that a bit of flex would help! The resin is brittle so a bit of Sikoflex type stuff would be best.

Bonding paste

Agree with Triton, bonding paste, available from from any GRP supplier is the best thing. Its like a thick grey resin, you mix in the catalyst the same as resin and dollop it on with an old butter knife (thats what i use anyway), then clamp the two parts together. Curing time depends on how much catalyst you use just like the resin. Cheers.

Aha - I haven't come across this paste before. It sounds like it is designed for the job.
I will toddle off to my supplier next week and see what he's got.

I went to my usual supplier for resin & paints (well mainly paints) and when I asked for bonding paste I just got a blank look!
Has anyone got a link or a trade name I can look for?

Bonding paste is resin thickend to a "peanut butter consistancy" by the addition of a glue powder, in other words ya can make it yerself! the alternative is to give CFS a bell. A search on yahoo or google will find their contact details they do mail order.

Thanks for the info - I found CFS here but they dont list bonding paste or glue powder I'll give them a ring later and see what they recommend.

So is the bonding paste just a resin / filler mix? If so can I just thin some P40 down with resin and then add my normal catalyst?

*edit* I phoned them and they do a product called Gravacol which is not on their website. It is a two pack bonding paste which cures to a slightly flexible finish - sounds ideal

Thanks Mark, I found a stockist quite near to me in Canvey Island (30 mins away) As the postage charge for this type of stuff is exhorbitant I will nip down there and get it.

i would do it with epoxy glue strong stuf I glued my fiberglas evo 6 scoop on my bonnet still is on the hood

Got some bonding paste now - £15 for a 2.5Kg tin including catalyst ..... bargain!

Have fun with it....can be very messy unless it's just the way I use it....

I was thinking about nicking the wife's cake piping bag and putting a bead 10mm thick around the areas to be bonded, clamping them up with Cleco pins and letting the whole lot go off overnight.
