Seat Belt Mounts
The Doc - 22/8/06 at 04:56 AM

Hi,
Anyone know the rules re how far back the lower belt mounts need to be? Also can these be offset ie one further forward than the other.

Is it the case that there is a maximum distance forward and provided they are both behind this they can go where preferred, whether off set or not?

My interpretation of the SVA guidance is that the lower belt must fit accross the hips therefore the mountings must be below seat level and in a position that will allow this placement . Obviously this depends on the belt type and seat. I have moved my outboard mountings forward so that they do not interfere with the trailing arm mounts.

Having built my car and been on the road a few weeks I would say the further forward the better!

Obviously you don't want them any further forward than your hip line but the closer the better so as to keep the belts down around your hips and not riding up to your abdomen. In an accident you want the lap belt nice and low otherwise you get worse injuries under the ribs.

Hope that makes sense...
