Anti-scuff Tape?
RazMan - 3/1/07 at 11:59 AM

Is there such a thing? Where bodywork panels meet (ie bonnet section meets mid section) the paintwork at the contact points is getting quite scuffed. Due to clearance issues I can't put thin rubber strip to act as a buffer so I need something as thin as possible - Teflon tape or something?

Any ideas guys?

whats the stuff they put on the front of elises and the like to prevent stone chips?

think it floats on with a water set of type glue or summat?

One solution that springs to mind is the thin black sticky back foam I use on my r/c planes. It's very thin and comes in 1 meter length’s about 20mm wide. It's used to stop the wings rubbing on the fuselage and is every good. Don't know how close a model shop is to you but you can get it off the net.

Option 1 helicopter tape would do but bloomin expensive. may dis-colour slightly over time

linky

Option 2 have a look at car builder soloutions they have some clear protective adeasive vinal for rear arches

Option 3 any vinal sign writers near you ?an off cut of clear vinal may be the 'true locost way ' ( possibly not the best option ) as I suspect a paint job of that standard is worth a little extra to protect

kind regards

As already mentioned, transparent sign vinyl will do the trick.

check HERE

for good price and quality.

also on Ebay

couple of tricks when fitting, mist spray the panel first with a mixture of 2 drops of washing up liquid,to 1litre of water.

use a hair dryer to make the vinyl more workable, ideally the vinyl and whatever its going need to be above 40 degress F.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys

After some thought I have decided to go eith the BMAA copter tape (ta very much myeates) as it is available in all sorts of widths to suit my various scuff areas.

As I used to be a signmaker I have used vinyl in various forms and I doubt that it would be strong enough to last very long - the copter tape is a 3M product made to a high spec and is a different animal entirely.

Thanks again

Very true, and it is probably very similar but they don't make the small quantities I want whereas BMAA have all sorts of sizes readily available

My local sign place sells armourfend type vinyl off the roll - its called 'Stoneguard' and made by Avery Dennison. I got them to fit it to my nose as stonechip protection but fitted some small strips myself for exactly the same reason you want some.

How much do you need?
