Cycle Wing Stays on Sierra Hubs

Hi, has anyone got some pictures, diagrams of the stays needed to fit the cycle wings to Sierra Front Hubs?

Can't seem to find anything so far, someone must have some pics somewhere!

The Robin hood 2B has an interesting arrangement to solve this problem. Someone is bound to have a picture of one in situ.

Yo, Bob -
Been on the edge of my seat for the whole week! Your http://forum.locostbuilders.co.uk/xmb/photos/cgi-bin/showpic.pl?front_no_body.jpg picture shows the inside of the cycle fenders (wings) at a distance, but I still can't tell how the bracketry is attached to the vertical links (hubs).

Did you just weld the brackets directly to the vertical links? Or weld bolts to the vertical links so you could attach the brackets with nuts? Or are they mounted to the lower A-arm? Or . . . ?

I'll be using Triumph GT6/Spitfire suspension, but it's similar.

I dont actually own a digi camera so its when someone turns up ith one.

Just for the record the brackets are bolted in two places,1st to the bottom b/j and then where the pinch bolt holds the top b/j holder where the mcpherson once was. You do need to get a bigger (longer) pinch bolt for this.

they were made by MK engineering and i think cost £30 but it was more than 3 years ago,check the site as they are hard to get right if your making yourself.

I was wondering about mounting them to the ball joint flange - but don't they then shift left to right over the tire as the wheel moves from droop to jounce?

Seems like they'd need to be attached to the vertical link to stay centered over the tire tread.

Bottom B/J fixing is solid and same goes for the pinch bolt holding the top B/J adapter,not heard of any probs and plenty MK's on the road.

I will try and get someone to pop round with a camera,a few people have asked about the brackets and i'd like to hekp if i can.

Must admit though for the price of them as well as the neatness i'd buy them again,i can see it being a bit of a hard task getting them right

I may not have been clear before about the problem I'm imagining with cycle wings mounted to the ball joint bases. Whereas the vertical link (hub) will always be parallel to the wheel, the angle between the suspension arms (to which the ball joints are bolted) and the wheel will change as the wheel goes over bumps, the car leans in corners, etc.

Seems to me that such angle changes would result in the cycle wings being centered over the tire at rest, but shifting inward over bumps and outward when the suspension drops - left and right across the tire tread - as the suspension goes through its range of movement. Is it not a problem because the suspension doesn't move up and down much on the glass-smooth roads of the UK?

I take it you've never been to south west london then .

Not been mentioned by any of the 100's of owners of this type of bracket,its direct to hub so so where the wheel goes the cycle wing goes.

I can't see how the cycle wing would move independent of the hub ??

It's bolted to the hub, and will move with the hub. It can't possibly do anything else, surely ?????

It's bolted to the bottom of the hub and pinch bolt

I had been misunderstanding where the stays/brackets were fastened to the ball joints - I'd only pictured the bolts at the BASE of a ball joint, but saw the other day that it's the "pointy" end of the ball joint that serves double use.

There's a picture posted at http://www.totallytriumph.net/dcforum/User_files/3f3aa8ee2e4d4fd8.jpg that finally made it clear to me.

So now I know. Carry on.

BTW, I placed the high bid on an eBay auction for a set of (Spitfire-based) Burlington Arrow plans - is it considered a Locost car, or must I never again mention it on this Forum?

carcentric, I've just realised your avatar isn't an odd looking "woody" sports car, rather a Locost superimposed on a GT6 or Spitfart or something.
It's to do with the season.

The avatar is as you said - my Straight Six roadster concept superimposed on the GT6 donor.
