Finishing Fibreglass
prelude1980 - 21/5/07 at 06:18 PM

I've tried searching but i can't seem to find out what people do to finish the cut edges of fibreglass. I mean when you drill or cut a hole what do you do to that edge to protect it?

Put masking tape on the top surface of the gelcoat, drill or cut from the gelcoat side only (downward strokes only) then with a drilled hole use a countersinking bit to ream the edges, with a cut edge use a file (downward strokes again from the gelcoat side only) to clean the edge....

I just got some paint mixed to match and touched up all the edges.

would like a clear lacquer be any good?

Would it not be best to seal the cut edge up with some fibreglass resin?

I always paint the inside of the bodywork satin black because it gives a nicer finish than patchy fiberglass colour and it is easy to wipe over with a damp cloth. To finish off any holes or larger openings I run a deburring blade around the edge and then finish the edge with a black permanent marker. It is a trick I learned from a cabinet maker. It is what they do on laminex edges. I have done this on my race cars for years and it always comes up a treat.

The fiberglass shouldn't delaminate if it has been laid properly and it is already waterproof.
