I have a patch of rust on the boot of my BMW, about 1" high and 12" wide.

I want to strip the paint off, treat the rust, prime it, undercoat it, paint it.

What do I need and where is the best place to get the materials from?

How good a job do you want?

If it is a metallic finish the chances are you won't be able to do a fantastic job at home with a spray can - but if you are not too bothered about perfection you should be able to make it look a lot better.

I would clean the affected area with a rotary wire brush in a drill "the tool" until the metal is bright.

Then apply etch primer followed by a skim of filler then rub flat with decreasing grades of wet emery paper wrapped around a flat block of wood to make a perfect surface for undercoat and topcoat.

how good it looks will depend on your skill with a spray can and filler...

You can get all that stuff at Halfords.

If you want to strip the whole panel and paint it nitromors should do the trick followed by the above procedure but you will need access to a spray gun and I understand that getting paint for home use is getting more difficult, as cellulose is being phased out...someone more in the know will be along to correct me on this again if it a metallic you will struggle to get a good match etc...

Alternatively a few quid at your local bodyshop should sort it out much better than you can ever do at home

I'd use something more abrasive than a wire brush to prep rust for paint.
A wire brush can just "polish" rust sometimes, I'd use a flap wheel

Well dude,

Its gotta be autoparts express in Benwell - they do 2k paint half the price of anywhere else!

You want:

2k Primer
2k Paint
2k Lacquer
2k Activator
Loads of Celly thinners

Plus lots of lint free cloths and wet / dry paper of various grades + maybe some of that jenolite stuff to kill the rust - well or make you feel better about it anyway!

Then mix all that in a giant bowl and throw at your beemer and voila!
