A great find for my project!
I can't tell you where I got it, but a certain forum who p*ssed me off recently, will be getting upset when they see my finished car!

P.S. Maybe best if you avoid releasing any further pics at this point. Purely from a legal perspective you understand.

Out of interest, what do you think he needs to worry about?

If you're suggesting Arial can moan about him using a Atom nosecone then aren't we all in danger of Ford getting pissed off with us?
There wouldn't be much of my car left if I removed the Ford bits!

...although, to be fair, you can't necessarily tell from the outside of most of our cars that Mr Ford provides a lot of bits. Here, it's a visible bit. S'pose it's like Westcost using Westfield bodywork on his Locost.

Anyway Martin, assuming you didn't nick the nose cone and don't pass your car off as an Atom, I don't see that there's much they can do.

Looking forward to seeing some more progress pics

Cheers.

He can make an exact copy and they can't do a damn thing as long as it's for his own personal use. He would only be liable for civil prosecution if;
a) He sold it and misrepresented it as an Ariel Atom.
b) Manufactured copies of an Ariel Atom for sale to third parties.
c) Called it an Atom if they have registeted Atom as a trademark, as Caterham have done with Seven.

So stuff them all, some of them!

nick205 - 9/6/07 at 06:45 PM

Call it a.....

LARIE MOTA (pronounced lairy motor)

A pure anagram or ARIEL ATOM

welderman - 9/6/07 at 06:48 PM

BOLD ATOM, as in washing dirty clothes

speedyxjs - 9/6/07 at 07:49 PM

How about electron instead of atom

goodall - 9/6/07 at 07:54 PM

if i was the boys at ariel i would be proud that i had made something people want to copy, like they would appear to have made the new generation of the lotus 7 and her many copies...

good progress, at this rate you will have it almost finish in next to no time

[Edited on 9/6/07 by goodall]

Howlor - 9/6/07 at 08:03 PM

Just simply call it MOTA, with a slogan of 'Can beat the rest even in reverse'

Any good?!

Steve

Thanks for all the suggestions for a name.
I am considering them all.
The car should be built reasonably quick as I have most of the parts that I need.
Major parts left to get are the driveshafts, a fuel tank, braided brake system and wiring. Titan are currently building me a steering rack. My uprights are virtually finished, but will need a trip to the platers before I put the bearings and hubs on.
I have the front subframe made with wishbones and the rear subframe/engine cradle is tacked together with suspension points in position.
I have the diff carrier made and it only needs mounting brackets.
Major fibreglass panels will take a little while as I have to construct a floor tub and a rear engine cover.
As soon as I have my hubs fitted, I will space the front and rear subframes along with the seat cradle. Once in position I will use conduit to create the two side rails then have these rolled properly in 1 1/2" 16 gauge tube, using the conduit as a template.
Lots of parts are sitting on shelves waiting to be bolted on!

oadamo - 10/6/07 at 07:35 AM

oh i said call it atomizer because it means a fine spray so you can tell them it p**
over the atom lol

I am taking photos etc.
I would need help to create drawings.
I can draw in solidworks weldments but the curved rails would be difficult.
The curve is not a set radius.
I will be having mine made to a conduit template. Unless they use a cnc machine, there wouldn't be any measurements that I could give.
It would not be locost either.
Although you could save money by using secondhand parts, my build so far has cost £12K and I expect to spend another £3k. I am going after a new reg.

Peteff - 10/6/07 at 10:09 AM

It's going to wee the Atom crowd off royally.
but it could sound like the miser's version of the Atom.

Atomiser
