Fold-down windscreen
carcentric - 1/9/03 at 04:54 PM

Has anyone built a fold-down (forward) windscreen?
Are any pictures available?

I imagine a simple piano hinge would suffice for attachment, but how would it be latched in the up
and in the down positions?

Take a look at landrovers, they all have fold down screens

they would be a good starting point, they use a hinge at each corner, a strip of rubber between the screen and scuttle to protect the frame and body, and an eye bolt on the back face at each corner to clamp it all together.

if you arent sure what i mean i can get some pics to illustrate what i am babbling about...

I can picture in my mind's eye all except the eyebolt - over here, that's a bolt with a closed loop on the end for rope or a chain link to pass through.

Might not hurt to see their hinge, too, if it doesn't look like a piano hinge or something like these Jeep windshield hinges: http://www.tellico4x4.com/images/omix/7493.jpg

So I guess all I really understand is the rubber strip!

Thanks,

kinda, tell ya what, i'll take the digicam into work and get you a few pics of the whole setup, (a picture speaks a thousand words, and all that) you'll understand what i mean then....

the first landrovers were copied from WW2 willis jeeps, which used a similar folding windscreen setup over 50 years ago. Landrovers are evolving slowly, but there are still one or two jeepish things even on the new ones.

which goes to prove the yanks have some good ideas after all

Seems like a good idea, the only issue I can se is that the windscreen wipers (presuming you have any) woul dneed to be fixed to the windscreen so that they folded down with it. Land Rover wipers are top hung I believe? Dunno how easy this would be or ugly this would look on a seven.

(At least for SVA) if you have a fold down windscreen you don't need wipers or a demist... I think...

Have any kind of screen you like for SVA JUST DON'T FIT IT!!

I'm going for a removeable screen so I can swap for aeroscreens on the track.
I've come up with a really neat solution, pics as soon as it's built.

back in the day land rovers actually had a split screen and an individual wiper motor and blade for each screen ( to get both wipers going you had to turn on the switch, on the back of each motor). they were mounted below the screen and moved with the screen as it was folded down...

sorry no pix yet (wife decided to tidy, and dosent know where she has tided the camera away to)
