Paint suppliers within driving distance of Ipswich
David Jenkins - 1/10/03 at 09:20 AM

Rather than hijack someone else's thread...

Does any member of the Suffolk posse know where I can get an aerosol made up in the colour of my choice within reasonable range of Ipswich? Movac used to do it, but now they've got all uppity, refusing to sell anything to non-professionals (it's to do with new regulations for accounting for solvent use). Even if I bullsh*t an order using my old company letterhead, asking for a couple of aerosol cans is a bit of a giveaway!

All I want to do is paint my scuttle in a colour that's close to the colour of my GRP bits, but I don't want to waste money on ready-filled cans while trying to find out which manufacturer's version of yellow matches my car!

There's a paint supplier I've spoken to in Harold Wood, but that's a PITA for me to visit (and their website is currently off-line, which ain't a good sign

cheers,

David

Not really useful to you but the car spares factor that my wife drives for will mix paint to your colour sample and put it in an aerosol. Not exactly cheap at about £8 each but they are big cans and would easily do a scuttle. The nozzle gives a good fan as well, not like the little ones from diy shops that always dry up before they hit what you are pointing them at.

yours, Pete.

the big Halfwits in Ipswich will make up spray cans - as long as you can identify a production car colour that matches what you want. - They aren't cheap though and the colour match isn't brilliant. You may be able to sweet talk them into coming up with a match for you.(NBL)

It's matching the colour that's the problem! If I knew which car colour was closest I'd buy some of that - it's far enough away from the GRP that a slight difference wouldn't be noticed.

cheers tho'

I thought that you might have a suggestion or two! Unfortunately I've never heard of either of them!

Do you know if the first one is open on Saturdays?

David

David,

I'm guessing you're talking about Leonard Brookes? Its not that far from me, been there a few times in the past (thanks to a fox). Don't know if I can be any help at all? I'm guessing you actually want to take the scuttle to the shop though? Or maybe take a pic, make sure its a good match for the colour when printed and post it to me?

Yes, that's the place I'm thinking of.

Thanks for the offer, but it wouldn't be too hard for me to get off the train home at Harold Wood and walk round the corner.

No, I'm not planning to take the whole scuttle! I have an off-cut from my GRP about 4" long, which is plenty big enough.

cheers,

David

Good call, Tim - went there yesterday, got confused 'cos it's now called "Bee Bee Refinishing Supplies", but came away with a couple of cans.

Quite amusing, as the bloke spent 10 minutes wandering back and forth with my little bit of GRP, trying out little blobs of paint until he found one that matched well.

cheers,

David
