Which ally sheet
RichardK - 16/12/07 at 08:14 PM

Pretty soon I'm going to need to buy some ally sheet.

Didn't realise there was so many different grades/types/anodised

Also not sure about the best thickness to use wrt bending forming and robustness.

Have found a supplier in Leeds that has this info, can somebody please give me a clue

I used 16swg, which converts to 1.6mm which was fine to bend for bonnet, scuttle etc, its also my floor although maybe a little thin in this application.

As Mark said, 1.6mm for sides and 2mm for floor - not sure about the hardness though.

Hi - I just looked on my suppliers website (elthringtons in Hull).

6082 is a high strength alloy, tensile MPa 310, 0.2%yield 260, not suitable for cold forming, 94 HBS hardness, used for structural section like lorry body corners etc - would probably be good for a floor.
5251 grade is medium strength, tensile 190-230, 0.2% yield 120, fair to cold work, 56 hardness, salt resistant, work hardens quickly.
3103 lower grade, tensile 140-180, yield 120, hardness 45, good cold working, used as roofing sheet and car body panels.
1050 99.5% purity, tensile 105-145, yild 85, hardness 34, good cold working.

Dont know about 4016

Hugh

You need half hard (H14 from what I remember) else you will have trouble with bends/folds.
