I'm lining the n/s sill with heat mat to protect it from the exhaust heat as normal.
Then I was in B+Q and saw a pack of that thin expanded polystyrene sheet with foil on it; The stuff for behind radiators to stop the wall heating up. So I was thinking, would a layer of this work UNDER THE HEAT MAT as extra insulation or would it get too hot?

You'd be better off checking out some of the proper foil heat reflectors for motorsport.

Rally Design probably do something.

Failing that, how about using the ceramic coated hessian wrap on the exhaust?

Don't even think about wrapping the exhausts on a Fury!!!
Exhaust wrap just stops heat escaping from the headers and moves the heat elsewhere. The sidepods on a Fury get bloody hot. If you use exhaust wrap on the header you'll likely reach critical temperatures in the side-pod!!! Fires in the sidepods are not unknown. Quite a few RGB Furies have cooling holes drilled into the sidepod to let out some of the heat....
I think no matter how well insulated the polystyrene is, the ambient temperature of your average sidepod is enough to make it go rather mushy.

Oops, my mistake!

What I have seen is the past is lots of dry grass and leaves finding their way into the side pod and getting rather singed - I'd imagine filling the side pod with what's effectively tinder is bad.

Wherever you have any openings or cooling holes, make sure they're meshed up.

As Ben says stay away from exhaust wrap at all costs.

I dont fancy expanded polystyrene sheet either. Exhausts are a lot hotter than domestic radiators.

NF Auto sell proper heat mat and contact adhesive. 2.5m and 2 tins of adhesive should do the job. Your passenger will appreciate it if you line the ali panel too.

Heating polystyrene makes it give off styrene gas, which is highly combustible.

cut a big hole at the front and back of the sidepod and preferably cut a slot along the length at the bottom.

the side pods get stupidly hot especially with bec exhausts. also line the side ali panel as otherwise you cook the passenger fairly quickly

What I'm talking about here is a layer of this stuff between the GRP and the (Rally Design) heat mat. It's designed to reflect heat off its foil surface but not exhaust temps but if it was that hot behind the heat mat then wouldn't the GRP suffer?

So how much heat get through the heat mat?

The heat mat is rated at very high temps IIRC - Doubt that the sandwich layer of insulation would do much...

I cut four 2" holes in the side of my pods - worked really well - even down through Spain in the middle of summer the bare ally panels didn't take my skin off!!
