I have my doubts over powder coating ,
as the very thing it tries to prevent is its ultimate downfall you have corrosion when you powder coat restasured it will come through eventually and is almost imposible to re powder coat and all those holes you have to drill cant be good ,
Your thoughts please.

The important thing is that parts are shot blasted immediately before powder coating. Also, better coating involves applying a base coat and a finishing one.

Powder coating is only suitable for completed components, it you need to drill, cut, or re-work post coating yes it is a waste of time.

The coating is not applied over rust, items to be coated are shot or bead blasted back to clean sound steel ally etc, chromate primed, then the powder is applied electrostatically to penetrate every nook and cranny, then baked.

I have had many components coated, mainly motorcycle frames and wheels, and been very happy with the results. About to take the spoke wheels for my MGB doing, I've no worries about durability....

Personally i think it has its place in the kit car ind for small components but for the chassis cant help but think its extra cost and the fact that when you drill or even damage it its hard to repair , and its some wot of a fad without much thought of its real value.
scratch your hammerite painted chassis rust appears , rub down rust treat and repaint .

that's easy to say from a pessimist's point of view, but it's just as easy to touch up powdercoat with a bit of paint if it gets a real gouge.

the fact that you cite hammerite as an alternative worries me slightly. hammerite applied to bare chassis tubes will chip off like nothing else on earth.

it's fine on a rusty gate, but not on clean metal. POR-15 on the other hand would do the job really nicely, but the necessity to spray it and initial material costs brings the cost about level with a decent powder coat job.

Hi the chassis i bought at the time was in a very poor condition left out side for some time .thought long and hard about powder coating , any how went for a good shot blasting red oxide primer and hammrite to Finnish along with my diff rear hubs eng block steering column all other bits and pieces cost 300 quid picked up and dropped off .

I had my front wishbones re-powder coated (from a naff silver, to black), but only because they are quite prominently visible at the front of the car.
The rest of the chassis has been done in primer and some sort of black top coat (don't ask me I bought it like this lol)
Touch ups have been done in rust inhibitor and black tough acrylic.
