Crash absorbing structure
smart51 - 10/3/08 at 12:57 PM

There's plenty of room in my new project for crash absorbing structures both front and rear. The problem is that google can't find any useful information. You guys seem to know everything between you, so any suggestions, hint, tips or nuggets of knowledge?

No, I don't plan to crash but I do plan on surviving one.

big blocks of foam with a glass skin, just like a car bumper

it takes me about 40-60 crash cars to make a suitable crash structure, for who i work for

sometimes we can make things worse when they seem better.

I'd just concetrate on making a survival cell and let everything else fall off in a crash

I wish you luck in designing a good one for you kit

Put in some lightweight tube structures without much in the way of triangulation, you want the tubes to crumple in a direction linear with the centre of the car, they should be triangulated so they don't just lozenge sideways, other than that the squashy foam or polystyrene blocks work well but need some method of location. I've done that. There is spare room so I want to fill it with something. I understand that I won't make the best possible structure but I do want to make the best I can.

Foam sounds good as it is light. I guess you want a stiff backing to it (so it doesn't snap) and some sort of front sheet to spread the load.

I stuck pu foam (expanding foam from a can) between a fiber glass backing, and the actual bodywork.

I then fibreglassed to and bottom to seal the foam in. As the foam sticks to the fibreglass it is a bit like cheap honeycomb.
If made the bodywrk much firmer as well as it is no longer a 2d shape.

perhaps some aluminum foam,

not sure how commonly used it is but is brilliant for energy absorption, could easily be used in a car....
