Im due to make my bonnet out of 1.6mm Steel.
Has anyone else done this and how did you form it to fit the car??
Thats mighty heavy for a bonnet. I used 1.6 for the sides of my scuttle and it was a bitch to bend ( hammers and dollies)
Dale
why not ali dead easy to work with
Is there a reason why you want to make it out of Steel?
You are MUCH better off making it out of Ali.
Steve
1.6 mm steel - you are joking right?
tin tops are made from something like 0.8 mm.
I.6 mm aluminium is said by some to be over the top but steel?!?!??!
RECONSIDER - this is a bad idea - hard to bend and shape, heavy to lift, and it rusts so will need paint which is excess weight.
1.0 - 1.6 mm aluminium is the best choice for this.
You will be hard pressed (pun intended) to bend the length of a bonnet in 1.6 steel without a decent hydraulic press or rolls.
Sorry
Hugh
Its ok.
Will look at either thinner steel or ali (after discussing it with the decission maker)
The side panels are 1mm or 1.6 im sure, but were formed at College.
bin the steel - toooooooooooooooooooo heavy - ally is far better - easier to work with and looks cool..
What about .5 mm galvanised steel? This is easier and cheaper for me to get than ally.
