Summer's here and I plan on doing the Fury bodywork this year.

Going to need to do a lot of filling and sanding to get it to the quality I want.

What's the best thing to use to (etch?) prime the gelcoard before applying a high build primer

Looking around Upol #4 seems readily available, but is it the best thing to use?

I just rubbed the gel down with 240 to get the shine of it, then went with primer seems to stick ok.

For best results I would recommend using +120 paper then priming with an acrylic primer then, very high grade wet and dry, up to 2500 for a flawless finish. as soon as paint touches that it will shine like glass, then finish of with an acrylic lacquer.

Said this many times, but here goes again...


The best grp paint jobs start with a good two pack EPOXY hi-build primer onto the gel. Then you can go ahead and put whatever you want on top of that.

The epoxy seals the porosity in the grp, and sticks like the proverbial to the gel gelcoat.

At least, that's how the marine and aircraft industries have done it since I was a very small boy. (Too many years ago to talk about! )
