I've just welded the roll cage to my Indy and want to paint it black to match the chassis.

Any ideas what the best paint or technique would be?

Thinners to clean then spray hammerite was the obvious answer but doesn't seem popular?

i don't see the problem with that myself.
I'm wanting to spray my chassis... think there's going to be more wated paint that actually hits the chassis though. i did hear somewhere of putting a negative DC charge on the chassis and it'll attract the paint. we'll see...

are you thinking of brush painting (always looks crap with hammerite i think, loads of brush marks)
or spraying?

Wouldn't use hammerite (unless the current powdercoat is hammer finish) as it tends to chip. If you insist then thinning with petrol is supposed to give a better finish.

What about talking to a local power coating company to see if they can do patch repairs.

The cage is bare metal and the chassis black satin finish powder coat.

I was thinking smooth hammerite sprayed.

Can powdercoating be done in situ?

Nothing wrong with painting it, but i have to say hammerite wouldnt be my first choice, altough i dont know what would.

If the chassis is powder coated why not powder coat the rollcage aswell

Its cheap enough to get done and will look much better in my opinion

I like the look of the Hammerite Metalmaster , I've no idea whether it works or not, but it looks good

The obvious choice for me would be "Chassis Black".

I used it on my TR6 chassis when i restored it and never had any problems.

You can get satin and gloss finish. Spray on or roller/brush

Get the Frosts catalogue. Loads of good quality finishes.

Hammerite isn't the best (IMO).

Por-15 is a system, and some of them are UV sensitive. I think the product you want is probably:
chassis_black_P500
but you need to read the instructions as it isn't as simple as "normal" paint.

I used the POR-15 metal-prep stuff to start with, followed by POR-15 paint. Finally this was rubbed down to knock the gloss off, and black paint sprayed on top. Far simpler to do than it sounds.

Lasted 3 years so far...

My plan, half done up to now, is to brush thinned enamel on (done), and spray it on later for a smooth finish. How much abuse is it going to take? It's not like people will be scratching it regularly, is it?

I did what RK has just suggested.

But I used Hammerite. Brushed on a light coat of Hammerite Smooth Black but with good coverage, then waited till it got a bit tacky and sprayed it with Hammerite Smooth Black.

It was commented on that it looked powder coated. It has chipped a bit, but then I've been chucking lumps of steel over it, with my new "cage". When it's all welded together, it'll get the same treatment.

Yes you can get powder coating done in situ, but it has to be baked on in an oven, so youd have to strip to a bare chassis or at least non-heat sensitive stuff only. I think youll be happier with a powdercoat finish, as itll match what you already have on the chassis.
Hammerite spray is ok, but messy, particularly if trying not to get it on anything else.... You will ALWAYS get some kind of overspray unless its fully sheeted and masked, which none of us ever do, unless we own a proper booth.
