
A simple question - how much clearance should I allow between the side of the tyre and the strut of the cycle mudguard support? Of course, I will make
allowance for the flexing of the strut itself - I'm just concerned about the tyre needing 'room to move' or something.
If it makes any difference, it's a 185/70 x 13" tyre on 5.5" wheels.

I have about 3/4 of an inch when static, when i push it toward the tyre it will touch it but it needs quite a bit of force to go that far so during
normal motoring it should be fine.
I can see no evidence of mine having come into contact with the tyre.
main thing to worry about would be tyre flex, so if you've got tall walled tyres or run them on the soft side then you'll have to allow a little bit more space. Got no measurements for you though, no where near that stage yet...

Yes I don't see how you would get tyre flex at the top...
However, you will perhaps get deflection of the mudguard due to wind pressure at speed.

Put your cycle wing in position and make the brackets to suit it, you don't want it too low to the tyre or it's a pig to get the wheel on
and off. With the guard centred over the wheel you may not need the stay too close to the tyre anyway.

It's just that I've made the stays and bolted one to the upright - and it's hard up against the tyre wall!
I did expect this, and I'll be putting a couple of bends in to clear the rubber - I was looking for a few clues as to how much!
Now I have a reasonable idea... (3/4"-ish)
