if you replace a radiator that has a cap with one that hasn't, I take it you need to fit an expansion tank with cap?

I think you do, if you don't have a pressure release somewhere this happens when you overheat for the first time:

Raceline dont use a header tank or a cap on the radiator .

They have the thermostat on the engine.

The system finds its own levell.

They do have a pressure release cap which sits right above the thermostat where you fill it up. This then let water out of the little outlet and is vented to a catch tank or the floor.

One question on this - on mine it has found it's own level, but is not full to the top. Does this not mean that there is going to be air in the system?????
