Fitting front wings

My Locost is built to the book so uses the book style front wing stays. I secured the wings with stainless pan head screws and used a rubber washer under the heads to allow a slight amount of movement. The gell coat has now cracked around the holes after 6000 plus miles. How do others fit their wings to prevent possible damage. Permanantly securing them to the stays is not an option though.
