Polishing Gel Coat?

What polish do people recommend for use on gel coat? Does it matter what it is really?

Cheers

I was recommended to use G3 paste. Not sure if you have to wax it after it to protect it though.

Do you just want to make it shiney? G3 is cutting paste isnt it?

If you just want wax, the Mer is pretty good stuff. IIRC its silcone based though. Which makes any surface polished with it a pain to glue anything to if you ever have to (even if you sand it down first!). I use it on my fibreglass boats and it dont half make them slippy

When i asked someone in the know about it, i was looking for something to get rid of the scratches. If you want to polish out the scratches, G3 is meant to be good, otherwise a good wax like the flak man said.

Whenever i have used G3 on paintwork it leaves a dull flat finish. G10 then brings back the shine. Good wax polish after that to seal it.

Careful on corners and edges - easy to burn thro if you use proper polishing mop. Plenty of water and careful as you go.

I'll second that - 1200 grit (big scratches) then 1500 grit - (both used wet) then G3 (again with water) then G10 then Autoglym Super Resin Polish (You cannot get a better polish!!)

Ive tried that german (??) bananary smelling carnauba based wax. You start with lump of waxy stuff, then deep cleansing, then wax. It is fantastic but bloody expensive. I got a starter kit (inc a leather cleaner) for approx £95. The rep had a stand at the Porsche in the park meeting (Harewood house) a couple of years ago. Used it once on my M3 but never had a car good enough for it since. The ZR will be getting a treatment.

I was told that Maguires is just as good for less dosh.

Theres an advert in PPC (full page) for something very similar to what i got, also far cheaper.

Its bugging me now - whats the name of the stuff i got????????

zymol perchance, based entirely on the bananary smelling stuff. smells like banana fungums-mmmmmmmmm

anyway, from experience, get some soap in with the water and ns dev has it spot on. i've not found farecla stuff locally tho, so use autosol, which does a nice job, and i concur, you can't get a better polish than autoglym super resin. i love the smell of that too........

Yes thats the one - Zymol. Wont be buying it again due to price but it is very nice.....mmmmmmm.... One of the more expensive kits have to be put on by hand. You get strange looks off the neighbours when they see you gently massaging your shiny bonnet with waxed hands whilst drooling at the mouth......
Its quite amazing when the car has been done properly just how smooth the bodywork is once all oxidation etc has been removed.

Feracle products are sold in both of my local motor factors. One of them does a lot of paint products. Its not always on the shelf so worth asking for. I hadnt used it before until i had a mate paint a car for me - now i always keep some G3 and G10 on the shelf. Comes in handy squirty bottles, about £5 - 7 a bottle (half litre???? iirc)

I also find the G10 very handy for cleaning up dirty wheels. It also seems to polish up glass quite nicely (although will NOT remove scratches).
