fibreglass questions

1 whats the best way to join f/glass together, for example two flat pieces would you use gel coat or resin to fill gap.

2 and how to repaire cracks, i read in a forum to dremel out crack, would you use resin to fill cracks or gelcoat.

3 do you need special primer on gelcoat.

4 gelcoat with added wax is called flowcoat whats that used for.

1. Fibreglass matt and gel coat for the join.
2. Dig out the crack, clean with acetone then fill with gel coat.
3. No special primer but the gel coat needs to be knocked back to "kill" the wax
4. Flow coat is used to seal the matt face, it's gel coat with added wax solution whcig dries smooth and not tacky.

Agree with Triton apart from item 2. If the damage has fractured the base GRP, in other words the crack has gone through the glass reinforcing, then you will need to back up the repair with a few layers of GRP on the inside, as well as making good the crack with Gel coat, (which by the way you need to cover with peel ply or similar, otherwise it wont set).

Peel ply is a bit like polythene sheeting, BUT unlike that it does not react to polyester resins, most GRP supliers will stock it. You can, if its just a small repair, use anything thats not affected by resin, I think that brown parcel tape works, though I've never tried it.

An alternative source is Overhead projector acetate sheet, Works fer me. The gum in the tape especially masking tape, reacts with the gelcoat in most instances.
Shug.

... anyone recommend a cheap numpty guide or book on working with fibre glass - I'm only interested in fixing cracks/splits not making moulds/bucks etc. Also some enlightenment about finisshing surface e.g. gel coat would be helpful.

Maybe there is some good stuff on the internet (fibre glass realtedthat is!)
