Windscreen repair kits

Anyone got experience of windscreen repair kits for cracked screens?

Which side of the screen do you apply the glue type stuff to... Or does it not matter?

Like a complete dufus I managed to crack my brand new Caterham screen (doh!!)... I was taking the screen off (to re-inforce the scuttle with some glassfibre), undid the bolts and one was under tension, it pinged out and the shock of the twang from the support bracket obviously travelled up the screen and broke it.... I can't feel a crack either side of the screen so how do I tell- apply a bit of glue on both sides and see which one wicks? Hopefully it's not both sides Then again, maybe they always break both sides of the laminating glass....

Cheers for any info....

Hate to be the bearer of bad news but cracks aren't repairable, chips are.
Even then, the special glue is set under pressure and with a UV light.

Well we'll see!
Bought some cheapo repair kit off fleebay
Video on http://www.gloveman.com.tw/products-1.htm
seems to show remarkable results but then it would do wouldn't it?!?
We shall see... more snake oil me thinks but when the screen is £80 (and a day off work) its worth a punt!!!!

Before you get carried away go here
watch the presentation, especially the bit about distance from the edge.
Your kit looks exactly like the autoglass one (although cheaper) but still is only to fix chips.
I know it says cracks, but you need something for the glue to go into and a crack is too small.

Well if the autoglass presentation is to be believed (it doesn't mention cracks but most places won't touch them) I'm pretty much screwed... Oh well, tis a BuyItNow done deal now (though I'm rather dubious).... We'll see- I'll post the results.

To be honest most Caterham screens I've seen have the odd chip or crack (flat and pretty much upright is a pretty harsh environment) and its not an MOT failure (I think!) but it would be nice not to have a crack clearly visable in the corner of a brand new windscreen reminding me what a numpty I am!! I'll post some pre and post pictures assuming the corner of the screen doesn't fall off when I take it out of the surround!!!

If it is at the top of the screen what about a sun strip?

Good idea! unfortunately it's the drivers side bottom corner. Its a diagonal crack from 3cm in to 3cm up (ie both edges of the screen, hence my worry its going to fall out if I take the glass out of the frame!!).
Oh well, I'll put the roof, side doors etc on before getting a new one even if the magic kit doesn't work... After all, putting the roof one tensions the screen and might fubar it up- it would be nice to do all the destruction testing on one £80 Caterham voucher...
At least the car is new so no MOT for 3 years, at that point hopefully the repeat trip to Caterham won't rub the salt in the wound quite so much....

You could of course take out the brocken glass, go to your local glass suppliers, and get a new one cut to pattern. 6.4 mm triplex, (or similar), should be no more than 40-45 quid. Then just rebuild the screen, its not rocket science. HTH Ray

Yeh- I tried doing that before going to Caterham. My local places gave me vague looks when I tried. They even gave me contact details for the local "experts" who also said "no way geezer".... To be honest, I think they couldn't be bothered unless it was going to be worth them a fair bit of money...

windscreen glass

Hi, you should be able to find a local company who replace glass in constuction/site machines. We have a local guy who does them from the back of a van.
The local vandals keep him busy. He even puts a kite mark on the glass.
Try yellow pages.
Hope this helps, Regards Kipper.

Doesn't your screen need to be E marked for sva?
Getting the glass cut will mean no mark.

Not a probem any more SVA is done and dusted!!!
There's no way I'd try and get a car through SVA with a screen, wipers etc.... Too many sharp edges and things to get caught out on.... Went screenless and rather radical in the cold weather for a the test (and the following couple of months)...

As your from N/W London you could try a place called Preedy's, which is out that way. They do all kinds of glass, and if you took them your glass as a pattern I'm sure they would cut it for you. Regards, Ray
