Painting Alu
I'm looking to paint some aluminum, do you go about this the same way as painting an ordinary car panel, or do you need to use a different /
special primer. Just after some advice so i can get supplies ready for saturday.

UNDERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the front of the car.
OVERSTEER is when you hit the wall with the rear of the car.
HORSEPOWER is how fast you hit the wall.
TORQUE is how far you take the wall with you.

you will be needing acid etch primer for that or the paint won't stick and will fall of in days

I always go for a 160 - 200 grit DA sander'd finish, and etch primer, ordinary primer will eventually flake due to the way ally corrodes.

You need to use at least a "special metal primer" from B+Q. It's preferable to use an acid etch primer (available from places like
Halford). Be careful when spraying acid etch primer, the wind changed direction when I was spraying and I almost nuked my eyes....

Agree with all the above, but give the ally a good going over with a fine wet and dry paper before you put the etch primer on, bit like belt AND
braces HTH Ray
To make a car go faster, just add lightness. Colin Chapman - OR - fit a bigger engine. Chippy

why? as soon as the aluminium is exposed to the oxygen in the air, the surface oxidises. just wipe it down with use some degreasing agent.

hi
Hi we treat loads of alu at work in the aircraft ind .
IT all depends of wot grade alu you have some alu comes already clad coated but if this has being damaged then you will need to retreat this with alu
chromate 1200. Normal alu primer can be applied to undamaged clad coated alu
Iam guessing that this is perhaps low grade alu and if you going to keep the car for some time it may be worth the effort to do the above but for me I
would just scotch bright the surface to key it clean off with solvent tac wipe and your ready to etch prime . hope this helps if you require some
paint numbers i can get you those and they are a to part mix hardener and paint.
