What shall I do with the bump?
My engine used to have a down-draft Weber carb on it, so it needed a nice big air intake bump on the bonnet.
Now that I've got bike carbs this bump is totally redundant, so I'm looking for useful suggestions for how to replace it. So far
I've thought of:
1. Take it off, weld in a patch. Wouldn't work due to distortion.
2. Take it off, rivet/bolt on a patch. Would look 'orrible.
3. Replace the bump with a much lower one made of aluminium... little more than a nicely-shaped bit of sheet. This is the solution favoured by Paul G
(907), but he's better at ali bashing than I am!
4. Replace the bump with a much lower one made of foam covered with GRP. My favourite solution, but I'm not sure how it would look.
5. Replace the bump with some form of grille, which would be useful to let some air out after it's been through the radiator. Anyone know of a
fairly large grille that may be suitable?
6. leave the bump. I hate having stuff on the car that doesn't do anything useful.
Any bright ideas?
David

Cut a symetrical hole opposite and cover both with mesh from behind thus providing a nice bit of extra ventilation.

Turn it around and put an lcd screen in the hole.
Must try harder

^^^ Like that
I would leave it. It helps cool the engine if nothing else and looks pretty cool
How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Best left in place - it probably channels more cold air into the engine bay than it would as a plain, flat grille.
Plus, it just kind of looks right with the brooklands screens and ali body - a nice classic style

what shall I do with the bump
Leave it there and make a plenum to direct cold air at the carbs, maybe a little forced induction at higher speeds.

That's a thought - wouldn't be difficult to make a duct to take air down to flow across the carbs (they're now on the driver's
side of the engine)
Hmm... I see a project looming!

There are some excellent 1 day wheeling courses around....
and they aren't that expensive.

I would go with that one actually. If riveted and done neatly it would actually look quite nice. Not a square patch, but a curved one much along the
lines of the existing bulge.
Nice and honest mod which tells the story of what happened to the car.

I'd just make a new engine cover. I think these cars look so much better without openings or bulges in the bonnet.

I'm not making another one! That was one of the hardest parts to get the way I wanted, after the rear ali panel. I even borrowed some time on
a friend's huge metal folding brake to get the sides folded under neatly.

Personally I would probably paint it black and make a guide below to feed the carbs cold air.
I think it'll be a bit plain without something IMHO. Louvres in a metal bonnet always appeal to me.

I'm a fan of the outlets idea, either one or a matching pair, remove rad heat and relieve pressure under the bonnet too.

If you have a need for it to be useful you could always route a pipe for something, air intake, cooling, something..
