Gel Coat Colour
Good evening.
With regards to colour used in the gelcoat. Can you have Metallics?

I was going more on the lines of the Nissan 350Z Orange. But I think that is more pearlescent rather than metallic.
I need to start thinking before i post lol
Sunset orange if I am not mistaken.

So I guess it means, having the body finished in grey primer, cut the neccessary holes for fitting various bits then send it for spraying?

If you;re dead set on paint, you might be able to save a little money on the bodywork by going for a plain finish rather than any gel coat.

Usually yes! You can get pearlescent gel coat but it's rare, expensive, you might struggle to find a body manafacturer who is used to it or
prepared to use it.
If you're spraying then it makes sense to spray it last so you don't risk chipping it whilst the drills are out!!
You'll likely get the bodywork in a gelcoat finish anyway then send it off to the sprayshop for spraying. I don't know personally of any
kit manafacturers who send it out in plain primer- but I may well be wrong...

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, I did a search and figured best not to start a new one
I'm hoping to place an order for a kit by the end of the year and was just thinking about colours and have a few questions regarding gel coating
and bespoke colours:
Is it possible to get clear gel coat then mix your own colour pigments to it? Then give this to the kit car manufacturer to use when moulding the body
panels?
What sort of pigments are used in gel coat? organic, dye stuffs etc..
Is there any heat involved with the gelcoat curing process?
How much gel coat is needed per set of bodywork? bonnet, nose cone, wings, scuttle etc..I'm guessing a good few litres
What is the ratio of pigment to gelcoat? ie. 5% pigment mix to 95% epoxy?
Have pearlescent gelcoats been tried before and have they been succesful?
Is this something kit car manufacturers generally stay away from?
What I'm thinking is, the company I work for buy in a lot of pigments let down into polypropylene from our supplier which are then used to give
colour to our injection moulded items. If the pigments used in gelcoats are the same as what we buy, I might be able to purchase the pigments directly
from our supplier,
If I can get a mix of pigments from our supplier in the colour I'd like, could I then give this to the gelcoat manufacturer to mix with their
gel coat and then pass this bespoke gelcoat on to the kit manufacturer to use when making the body work?
Has this been done before? Is this a silly idea? any input appreciated
Cheers

I have used metallic gels before but with very mixed results, its very hard to get a consistant quality.
I even mixed brass filings with gel once when i had to make a statue out of GRP, the end result was quite impressive and you could even polish it up
with brasso and get a good shine!
