GRP / Fibreglass Sidescreens / Half Doors

Just finished making these. I had to make a mould, so I can pull off a few more if there is interest. Should fit all MK Indys (and Mac#1s?), but might fit others too. Weighed in at 3.1kg for the pair.

I went with gelcoat on the outside and smoothed and painted the inside, but you could use vinyl or anything really.

Really cuts down on the noise and wind. You can even have a conversation at all legal speeds which was impossible before. Also seem to be getting a couple more MPGs.

I can provide dimensions tomorrow, if needed.

There are 2 doors, but didn't get the second one fitted or either one painted while I had the camera out.

Took a while to figure out, but went with the reverse lambo hinge fitting in the end. I'm sure I have seen this before, or maybe I was struck with a moment of insanity genius.

why didnt you use the correct colour gelcoat in the first place.

Very nice

I love the scissor action, havn't seen that on a seven before. Most of them hindge on the wondscreen/aeroscreen





How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

Do you mean why didn't I use yellow on the outside, in which case I went with black because I didn't want the hassle of colour matching the existing gelcoat.

Or do you mean, why didn't I paint the inside with gelcoat, in which case I painted it with regular paint because I didn't have the wax to add to the gel to make it into flowcoat, or any means to smooth the surface perfectly flat.

Ideally, I would have used a cold press to create a double sided item, but I couldn't justify the expense of tooling for what is essentially a one-off item.

Makes is dead easy to get in and out, and you can park right next to other cars and still be able to open the door. Also, the scuttle is pretty thin to be cantilevering a large sail area off.

Credit to my dad for the plug design and helping with the laminating. It's a lot less frenzied with one person mixing resin and laying glass while a second consolidates.

Trim Supplier??

Yer doors look fine, but not too sure about the "reverse" hinge. How have you secured the forward locking mechanism?

Plus, pls can you advise where you obtained this ally trim strip, shown in your pic?

This same thought prompted me to line the inner sidewalls of the scuttle with 6mm ally sheet, so that I can mount a screen at some future point. Since the ally liners are anchored to the chassis rail, any attached screen, or mirrors will also be fixed to the chassis, thereby relieving any potential loads on the glassfibre.

The front sits on a simple square sided hook shaped bracket. The weight of the door makes it naturally sit on the bracket, and the acceleration and braking forces only act to prevent it rising up. The bracket is lined with foam so it's a snug fit.

Ally trim came from MK Sportscars about 5 years ago. I believe the profile is called birds beak, but not sure if that is the standard name for it.

I was thinking £100 for the pair + P&P, or I can deliver to the North East area for fuel money. That would be finished in black gelcoat on the outside, with an unfinished side on the inside, the GRP only, no fixings.

I painted the inside with Hammerite, and it is definitely smooth enough to run your fingers over without them catching, or it could be vinyl covered.
