silicone beading

wasnt sure where to put this post... but here goes.
whilein work last night, i noticed the silicon sealent round the edges of the sink, and it looked so neat and tidy...
whenever i try to put a bead between two surfaces at 90degrees to each other, i have to smear it down with my finger, and it starts to look messy.
im sure there must be a proper technique for this, which id love to know - as the next beading i need to do is on the bodywork, and i dont wana mess up the look of my whole car due to crapp inishing touches.
cheers,
Tom

Wet your finger first so you dont drag it everywhere. Its that simple.

It seems to be one of those things you need to have the knack for.

lots of practise and a steady hand are good starting points. Also cut your nozzle at an angle at about the same width as you want your bead then practise getting the speed and pressure on the gun right.

Yep a wet finger is the way to get that nice smooth finish on silicon. You can also dip your finger into a soapy solution (really strong washing up liquid solution works well) which makes it even easier. (And stops the silicon sticking to your finger quite as much )

There may well be a pro way, but that way works just fine for me

I always use masking tape when sealing around baths and showers etc. Smooth down with finger, remove tape, professional job.

Silicone Technique

On a 90' joint (work surface to wall) I understand the proper way is to push the gun away from you, holding it at approx 45' .
In effect you push the silicone in front the nozzle which smooths it.
I have used this quite succesfully on straight runs, but tricky areas needs to be tooled with a wet finger etc.
but its best to wait a few minutes to allow it to skin slightly.
hope this helps

Definately the masking tape method. I was told this by a professional that fitted vinyl flooring under drinks machines. He also said dont use too much sealant as spreading it with your finger makes it go a long way. I use this method every time now with spot on results.
