Ducting air into back of engine bay
Hi, i am currently building a saab 96 that will have a ford zetec inside it. however because the engine is longer than the v4 it replaces i will have
to move the radiator from the front to the back of the engine.
there is enough space for this but i want to know whats the best kind of duct to use in the bonnet so i can get air flow through the rad that
hasn't past the engine.
its quite a complex thing to make a good duct, what kind would be a good one to use? bearing in mind the bonnet is made of steel.

Going to be really hot behind the engine.
Why not mount it in the boot and duct it.

well i don't want to resort to that as this is going to be a road car and i don't want a rad in the boot with really long pipes running to
it, they would be quite long!
i know it can be done behind the engine as thats where the rad is put when a v6 is put in place of the v4.

Hi there,
An interesting idea...
I guess you're already aware that owing to the airflow over the bonnet you'll have a job making a vent which flows well enough.
If you can I would reccomend trying to duct from just in front of the windscreen where threre is a incidental high pressrue area owing to the rake of
the windscreen. I guess this might turn out to be a little too far back - I suppose the alternative is to use vented side panels in the existing
bodywork to draw air out to the sides and/or try using a scoop from underneath.

unless i've just mistaken what you've said.
The Saab V6 puts the rad in the place you want to do it. Why not copy what Saab have already done? Get a v6 bonnet + rad + mounts.
Or have i miss understood?

sorry i didn't explain the v6, the saab comes with a v4 as standard.
however some modify the 96 by putting the v6 version of the v4. as its longer it requires the radiator to be moved to the back as i am doing
so the mounts have to be made up from scratch anway and as i have so far found little info on the installation of the rad in this configuration.
i kno about the complications of getting a good flow of air through a duct. however the area where i would put the duct would be quite close to the
windscreen so could take advantage of the high pressure there.
my other idea was to put louvres in the bonnet so the hot air can escape, hopefully allowing enough airflow to keep the radiator working.

I would open the holes on bonet so the hot air can exit (something like micubishi evo 6 - bu a little bit more thoward the windscreen) , and make
tunels from front bumper to the radiator (U can use PVC water pipes or flexibile tubes for kitchen aspirators the ally ones) ... that is something
that will provide the best air flow

that is my current thinking at the mo, i was thinking of putting louvres in the bonnet, with the openings facing the windscreen, hot air should be
drawn out of these i beleive.
correct me if i am wrong about that!
ducting air from the front is prob the best way to get cool air flowing through the rad. will hopefully have enough space for this!
