Windscreen

Has anyone, succesfully, made their own windscreen and surround in the way "The Book" suggests?
I can see that uncle Ron's method for forming the top radii will probably work but I am less sure about forming the internal rads for the scuttle profile.
Any proven methods or ideas anyone?

The other potential problem is finding a suitable cross section sealing strip for the screen to scuttle join. Any ideas?

I would also be grateful for any links to online alluminium extrusion suppliers that stock "U" or channel section ally.

For how to do it, go here: http://www.cheapsportscar.net/index.php - I also bought his book. Worth every penny! I'm making my own windscreen, now that I've seen his setup. As for the seal, most autobody & paint supply stores sell sealing rubber in all sorts of different cross sections...

Forgot to mention - I found two local suppliers (in Canada, tho) - one was the Metal Supermarket (they have several different sizes), and the other was a window-manufacturing place. Good luck!

Hi Brian,

Worth having a word with Mango on here? Hes not been online for a while due to family stuff, but I am sure he can help you out. He might be able to point you to suppliers, or more likely be able to supply you with a complete screen. Unless you really want to do it yourself.

Bit windy without a screen?

David

Un fourtunatly I cheated again and bought the glass on ebay. I Still have it in the garage as a spare. I paid £65 for it.

I can vouch for Mango's work I have one of his screens waiting to be installed after the SVA.

Thanks for the info about Mango but I do fancy having a go at this myself as I'm in no rush to do it. I'm happy to drive the car screenless during the summer but would like to make something in time for Autumn/winter.

Strangely, it's in the summer that I most miss a screen! The helmet gets a bit hot, but you need it because of all the flying insects.

In the winter you appreciate the warm helmet and there's no bugs!

It would be nice to just climb into the car on a nice evening and drive without the hassle - but I don't let it bother me too much - any excuse for a drive!

B&Q / Homebase usually have aluminium U-sections.

Lolocost used to do one quite cheaply. Not sure if they are still around?

I tried to get the parts off lolocost, but they were not doing the screen sets and for the ally channel i would have had to drive up to their factory/shop for it. as 150miles each way I was not go do that either.

PS tried the Homebase, B & Q, Focus do it all route as well and none had anything that i could use.

The Caterham screen NEARLY fits the MK scuttle - you end up with small gaps in the extreme corners. It seems to fit better if you mount it on the top of the 'ridge' (slightly wider). It's what I've got. Uprights laser cut to my CAD drawing from 3mm stainless.
My screen is heated too, though never had to use it!
