DIY metallic paint spraying

Now that I have the scuttle off, and seeing as this would be the most awkward piece to spray, I am thinking of changeing colour. I have in mind a fluorescent metallic orange but dunno if I will be able to paint it myself.

The way I paint cellulose non-metallic colours is with an air gun and 4-5 coats. After sanding the base and putting a coat of primer if painting bare metal, the first paint coat one usually comes out orange peely (someone will tell me what I am doing wrong) but no problem as I sand it down with 400 grade. Then repeat for the next coats until the last but one is sanded with 1000. The result is as good as any mass produced car albeit it takes a fair bit of time with the sanding.

Anyway, will the multiple coats/sanding method work for metallic paint? I would not sand the final coat but if I did, will it look "scratched" before the laquer is put on?

And can I put more than one coat of laquer, sanding in between? (but not the last coat).

And about paint - can a non-metllic paint be made metalic by adding metalic flakes or am I getting confused with GRP resins?

Don't rub metallic down with 400, 1200 is the roughest you'll need on it. Just flat the last coat off till it looks dull after it's hardened for a day then apply a couple of coats of lacquer and let it harden before you finish it with whatever compound you use. I don't like metallics much but that's what I've done with them. Metal flake additives are for custom finishers from what I've seen, Mark Allanson had some from ebay so he might put you wise as to what you can achieve with them.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
