Rust (damn carpet)

Hi all,

Carpet in passengers foot well has caused some rust underneath, whats the best step to getting rid of it?

Would I be OK to just clean up then treat all the patches of rust with rust treatment? I'm thinking of the ones that form a protective layer while working, unsure of they all do this?

Thanks, Simon

Give it all a good rub down. Then treat it with someting like Krust, then spray it black with hammerite smooth.

Then in 3 years time do it again.

Paul

edit - may be a good idea to spray some wax or something inside the chassis tubes via the seat holes . just a thought.

How about filling the footwell up with water and converting it into a huge electrolysis tank? Get the polarity right and you could get rid of all the rust over night

Thanks for confirming that, just wanted to make sure.

I could submerge the whole car...anyone know the affect of electrolysis on a complete engine? I don't fancy being the guinea pig for that just yet

edit - Having said that, I have checker/chequer plate on the driver's side, was going to do the same to the passenger side, but you suggesting repeating treatment in 3 years or so, would riveting floor down seem like a bad idea?

I second the Krust idea. You don't even have to give it much of a rub. I also use a decent zinc primer over that (one with enough zinc content to actually give sacrificial protection) then paint. Then you only have to do it every 6 years.

Sounds like a plan, will hop to it, then have to start cutting floor plate

Sucks being a noobie at this!

Had the same problem with my floor although I didn't have carpet. Put some antislip on the floor after treating the rust to stop my feet sliding about.
