To flat or not to flat?

Just finishing off the nose-cone and bonnet. Have sprayed both using cellie and about to wack on a couple of coats of clear lacquer.
Not having used lacquer in the past is it best to flat (1500 wet&dry) the colour coat before lacquering or just tack-off and then put it straight on top?
Any advice appreciated.
Cheers, Pewe

I always give it a flatting before laquering, using 1500 - 2000 w&d, once you have a uniform 'flat' finish you'll get an amazing finish from the clear coat.

as above, do flatten it and then take the panels outside in the sun (ok daylight) and have a very good look for any defects or patchy areas. Only apply very light coats of lacquer and carefully build it up. Then leave it for a few weeks before cutting it back with something like t-cut, wait a further few weeks and then apply a good car polish. Should end up like glass if done carefully.

I would flatten off using 1200 or finer up to the last coat; each successive layer should need less sanding.

the last layer I would not sand and would dilute a bit more with cellulose.

Flat the panels with grey scotchbrite, don't get water anywhere near the paint. Apply the clearcoat (assuming 1K) and denib with 1000 and polish back with Farecla G3, don't use T Cut as it contains ammonia and will cloud the clear.
