I'm going to need to hire a van for a couple of days/weekend to shift a whole house-worth of furniture from Kent to Edinburgh (so I'm guessing it'll need to be a luton)

I know plenty of you have hired these things to pick up your kits so anyone got any recommendations ?

Try getting a quote for removal on shiply.com, my mate is a white van man and is always moaning that shiply do jobs for less than it would cost him in fuel !!

If you have a whole house worth of stuff I don't think a Luton will be big enough, I hired a Luton at the weekend to shift a few bits and pieces of my grandads and with just a bed, sofa, arm chair, table and a few other odds and sods it was looking fairly full. Certainly nowhere near a full house worth of stuff. The other thing was that it all got p1ss wet through in the back, must have been a crack in teh fibreglass roof or something!!

Yup, been there myself with Luton vans. Took quite a few trips and the mattress (which I bunged on top of the last load) came out soaking due to a crack in the roof

You might be better approaching local haulage firms and getting the back half of a truck. I have done it a couple of times and usually manage to get a good price for this with load/unload by me and my mates.

My daughter moved from London to Edinburgh 3 years ago and it cost £350 for local delivery men to do everything. Dunno how they did it at that 'cos the derv must be close to £150.

Worth getting a few quotes.

If you still want to hire despite the recommendations to go another way, its worth trying Enterprise - they are about the cheapest and they have pretty new vans.

We hired a Luton from a 'cheap' firm to move our son from London to Wales a couple of months ago - because it was a 'cheap' firm, they only had one Luton which was 8 years old. It had no power, and drank fuel. The van cost £210 for 3 days, but the total fuel bill (diesel) was £260!

In contrast, we hired a smaller, 2 year old transit - sized vauxhall from enterprise (£41 for the day) and fuel economy was much better, and it went like sh.... off a shovel!

Speak to the guys at the Haddington car / van rental company. I've always found them helpful enough and their rates are reasonable.

Try and collect last thing in the day and get back before 5pm the next day so you're only charged for a single days hire.

We just moved and the Luton used by the removers (same size as the hire jobs) needed 3 trips and they were packing close to maximum efficiency.
You can hire bigger and do things in one trip if you are an old f*rt like me with a license that covers them, and aren't scared of a "proper" sized lorry, but I doubt it will be much cheaper than a removal company - especially right now as people aren't moving as much and they are more inclined to be competitive.

Good luck, whatever happens you'll be knackered at the end of it!
