Megasquirt rpm issue
ibakes - 6/4/19 at 07:38 PM

Hi all. Having a bit of an issue

I have a ms1 v3 eck running ford edis 4 ignition.

My car has been off the road for a number of years and have rebuilt it and ready to get it running again.

Before I took it off the road it was running but had a very bad map.

The other day I started the car up for the first time since the rebuild and it was running quite happily. The temperature came up, fans cut in and it was idling nicely while I was keeping an eye on tuner studio.

Anyway after 20/30 minutes of it running, it suddenly stopped and I'm still having issues to get it started again.

I have figured out today that when in tuner studio I have no rpm showing when I am cranking it over. But I do have rpm on the simulator

When I turn the car on I get the initial prime of the injector and then no more fuel when cranking.

I get very random sparks from the plugs

I have 12v on the middle pin of a new coil paco. And get around 4mv on the vr sensor when cranking. I am still yet to buzz out the other 2 leads to the coil pack.

Is there a way I can test the edis module just with a multimeter for the saw and pip signals?

Otherwise I will be buying a new one from eBay

Thanks in advance.

Symptoms sound like crank sensor - is 4mv enough? Will an Edis fault stop fuel/injectors?

It will stop fuel as the ms does not know the engine is turning. Pretty sure that's right anyway.

Will see what I can find for the vr sensor voltage

Its just annoying how it was running really nice and started and stopped with no issues.

I had literally the same setup and had ignition noise issues. Are you running low or high impedance injectors?

Standard duratec injectors. Not sure if they are high or low.

It's been working before and was ok for a good 30 mins before it stopped.

Also I think I read my voltages wrong. It read 4 on the .200 setting so .4 of a volt

You’re right - MS needs the PIP signal from the EDIS to know the engine’s turning. I’m just learning all of this having fitted a zetec on MS which seems to have dead injection drivers!

And VR voltage when cranking is only mV.

TPS hasn’t died has it - if MS thinks it’s wide open it will go to flood clear mode (ie no fuel)?

Thank you. Glad I'm on the right lines.

Just annoying at the moment as I would rather be working on a decent map (ok letting tuner studio do it)

Might replace the vr sensor then the whole lot would have been changed.

It would be good to confirm what the issue is

No tps is still fine and you can see floid clear active when fully open.

I would get rid of the EDIS and use the MS to control sparks

Set your multimeter on ac 20v range, the vr sensor should show approx 3v while cranking.
If your dvm has a frequency setting, the output should be 180hz at 300 rpm.
Check the resistance of the sensor, it should be 400ohms, recheck it at the edis connector end, it should be the same.
I have also had several zetec se crank sensor mounts work loose and the sensor touch the flywheel, this can break the internal magnet and reduce/stop output voltage.
The edis unit is normally bulletproof, i have never replaced one for a fault.

This! If you are getting only 4mV on the AC voltage setting then the sensor is dead, it should be at least a couple of volts at normal cranking speeds.

Hi All

you were correct a new sensor and it started straight away, thanks all.

Now on to the map. I will upgrade to the full version of tuner studio and use this for the moment
