something like this should be ok.

If its what your looking for. im pretty sure people have used them with R1 engines.

can these things be used on car engines? sure i could just look at the gearstick if i ever needed to, but it would be cool

Yes. Takes a reading from the tacho and the speedo (assuming the speedo is electric) and "learns" the gears from there...

mm cool. just coz it says it works with 'most bikes' but i suppose it'll work with some mods to the wiring, rather than just simple plug and play like it would on a bike

The acumen unit guven by Chippy can be bought with a wiring harness to fit straight into the R1 loom - it's about £20 more for the loom, but it;s what I'll be doing to keep life nice and easy.

Or... for a locost option there's a PIC based gear indicator on my website... Works off the neutral light and microswitches on the gear stick....
